Google Go, Oreo Go, Files Go, and Google Assistant for Jio Phone were announced At the Google for India event in New Delhi; the company launched a single app that will deliver the unified Google experience. Called Google Go, the app integrates Search, Voice Search, GIFs, YouTube, Translate, and Maps, along with Facebook, Instagram, and CricBuzz. It also provides search trends and top stories from the web on certain topics. The app weighs less than 5 MB and is designed for smartphones with less than 1 GB of RAM, it can be downloaded from Google Play and comes preloaded on Android Go devices.
At the event, Google also announced Oreo Go, an Android Oreo version optimized for low-end handsets. Google says optimized apps will take up 50 percent less storage space, and the average app startup time will be 15 percent faster because of this initiative. The Files Go app was announced at the event and aims to help users save storage space, find files faster and share files offline (Google claims 200 times faster than Bluetooth) with nearby handsets. It comes with Google Play Protect and Data Saver is enabled by default. Along with this, Google Assistant for Jio Phone was announced at the event.
Google Maps gets India-first Two-Wheeler mode, Tez set to pass 12 million active users. Google made several other announcements during the event. Chief among these was the introduction of the “India-first” Two-Wheeler mode in Google Maps, designed to help motorcyclists in the country find the most suitable route for their vehicles. It includes custom routing, voice-activated navigation, and enhanced landmark navigation.
Google says Tez has processed 140 million transactions since launch and, citing NPCI data, claimed it accounted for 70 percent of transactions on OHIM UPI during the October-November period. The internet search giant also revealed that it’s Tez payment app would pass 12 million active users in the coming days; five weeks ago, the figure stood at 7.5 million. The company also plans to bring its free public Wi-Fi service outside of train stations in India.
