Cold brew has steadily become one of the most popular ways to consume coffee. Although the drink resembles iced coffee, cold brew has its method.

Making cold brew coffee is easier than it looks. Once you’ve mastered your inner barista skills, you’ll be making the perfect cup of (hard) joe in no time, be it a hot summer day or a chilly winter afternoon.

How do you make cold-brew coffee?

To start, you need coarsely ground coffee. You can grind your coffee at home if you prefer, but store-bought ground coffee will work fine too.

The ratio of ground coffee to water is adjustable, but the rule of thumb is that for every 1 cup of water, you need 1 ounce (by weight) of ground coffee.

In a mason jar or large wide-mouth jar, combine the desired amount of water and coffee grounds and stir (Tip: If you’re trying it for the first time, use 3 cups of water for 1 cup of coffee grounds).

Cover the jar and let this mixture steep overnight, for about 12 hours and up to 24 hours. Once the coffee and water mixture has finished steeping, pour it into a coffee filter placed in a strainer over a bowl or measuring cup.

The liquid that comes out of the mixture is the cold brew concentrate which you can dilute with water or milk to taste. Serve with ice or other additions, and enjoy.

What is the difference between iced coffee and cold brew?

Iced coffee and cold brew may look the same, but the two drinks are made differently. The cold brew process, as explained above, is different from making iced coffee, which consists of brewing a regular pot of drip coffee and adding ice.

Cold brew is steeped longer than iced coffee. But hot-brewed coffee brings out additional flavors, such as bitterness and acidity, compared to cold-brewed coffee, according to Taste of Home.

Is cold brew healthier than hot coffee?

According to Healthline, hot coffee contains more antioxidants than cold brew, but the latter still has quite potent antioxidants.

Some studies show that cold brew is less acidic than hot coffee, allowing it to go smoother. This can make the drink an alternative for people with acid reflux or indigestion.

According to Healthline, cold brew concentrate is very strong on its own, containing about 200 milligrams of caffeine per cup.

The drink is intended to be diluted with water and milk, reducing the total caffeine content and making it comparable to a hot coffee cup. Although the caffeine content varies depending on the brewing process, there is no huge difference between cold brews and hot coffee.
