Bone broth and booze? While the idea of spiking your soup may not have crossed your mind, adding the liquid to cocktails is worth raising a glass, says Kellyann Petrucci, a naturopath.

“I love this thought because most of the cocktails we drink are made with a lot of simple sugars,” she says. “They have a lot of ingredients that are usually higher in calories, and most importantly, a lot of the alcohol we consume will wreck our waistline and our good bacteria in our gut.”

Mixing bone broth adds protein and collagen. “The best part is you won’t feel like you’re drinking soup because bone broth’s flavor profile makes them great for cocktails,” says Petrucci, who wrote “Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Diet.” She says broth goes well with jalapeño, lemon, and lime.

And there’s a precedent for pairing stock and booze, points out James Beard Award-nominated spirits and cocktail expert Derek Brown.

“You’ll see broth — especially beef stock — pop up on a lot of older cocktail manuals,” he says, referring to the Bloody Bull, a take on the Bloody Mary made with beef broth. “Everything old is new again.”

The benefits are many, according to Petrucci, who says the collagen in broth can thicken hair, strengthen nails, and improve gut health, sleep, and appearance. “If you get hits from this collagen, this gelatin early on, it’s like Spanx for the face,” she says. “It lifts you a bit and gives you that thick, beautiful skin.”

Petrucci recommends starting with two cups of stock a day and believes that the mild taste of chicken stock can help people consume it as part of a routine. She also suggests freezing stock in ice cube trays. “You can put them in cocktails. It’s quick, easy, convenient, and people love it.”

Brown warns that not every ghost will play nicely with broth. “There are some, like vodka, and the ones that aren’t super tasty, that gets lost,” he says. “And that might be the goal, and that might be a good thing.” He prefers a combination of stock and dry sherry and says tomato and basil would complement the store. Brown, author of “Mindful Mixology: A Comprehensive Guide to No-and Low-Alcohol Cocktails,” also says broth can be the star of a non-alcoholic drink.

“Instead of saying, ‘I have to have alcohol in this,’ (try) to think of broth as this delicious savory element that can make (you) the protagonist,” he says.
