Monkeypox Virus News Live: The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said it had confirmed a single case of Monkeypox virus infection in a man who had recently traveled to Canada.
The state agency said it was working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and relevant local health authorities to conduct contact tracing, adding that “the matter poses no risk to the public and the person has been hospitalized and in good condition.”
Canada’s Public Health Agency released a statement late Wednesday saying it is aware of monkeypox cases in Europe and is closely monitoring the current situation, adding that no cases have been reported.
Monkeypox, mainly found in West and Central Africa, is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox, although milder. It was first recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the 1970s. The number of cases in West Africa has increased over the past ten years.
Symptoms include fever, headache, and rash, starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body.
